Hello? Are you there tennis world? It’s me, Maria Sharapova. Remember me?

Oh yes…yes we do.

In one of the most anticipated first round matches in US Open history, Maria Sharapova [WC] d. Simona Halep [2] 6-4 4-6 6-3 under the lights on Arthur Ashe stadium.

From the moment the draw was announced, many had this match circled with the thickest red sharpie. We’re talking, like, ink bleeding through your draw sheet onto your table aggressiveness of sharpie-ing.  And if you didn’t, then you missed a heck of a match.

Only 10 matches in the last 19 months? No problem. Missing nearly the entire US hardcourt season? Casual. A WebMD injury search history the size of Texas? Naturally.

But despite all that, Maria believed. And she made casual viewers, loyal fans, media, and the haters alike all remember what a presence and competitor she is in her first Grand Slam appearance since the 2016 Australian Open — her first since her return from suspension.

Check out the buzz from the match care of, what else, the internet:

Maria Sharapova’s aptly titled autobiography — Sharapova: An Autobiography — is set to be released on September 12, 2017, according to Amazon.

When Sharapova’s book was first announced in November 2015, many fans could have easily predicted several chapter topics: origin story, rise to world no. 1, etc.  Since that time, things got interesting to say the least.

Here’s a snap of Sharapova putting the finishing touches on her book.  You can check out the synopsis and pre-order the book on Amazon now.  Jam not included.

Maria Sharapova attends 2014 Sochi Olympics

Putting tennis on pause, Maria Sharapova landed in Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics as an NBC Correspondent and participant in the Opening Ceremonies.

Proving to be the opposite of Waldo, it’s been fairly easy to spot Sharapova in Sochi, as she’s been fulfilling many corporate sponsor commitments, along with filming NBC segments. It’s clear, though, that being apart of the entire Olympic movement is what it’s all about for her (as evidenced by her many high-fives during the opening ceremonies).

Check out what Sharapova has been up to:

Running the Olympic flame into the Games. NBD. (In Spanish!)

Visiting the court where it all started.

Taking in some figure skating.

“Working” for NBC with Mary Carillo.

Yeah, I’d say it’s pretty good to be Maria Sharapova.

Maria Sharapova withdraws from 2013 US Open

Make that three withdrawn tournaments for Maria Sharapova this summer. After pulling out of Stanford and Toronto, Sharapova announced today she has also withdrawn from the US Open, citing right shoulder bursitis.

Come around every big tournament and commentators will always remind you of Sharapova’s surgically repaired shoulder. But that always felt like old news five years on. The shoulder surgery occurred in 2008 and this is 2013. So no more problems, right? Not so fast.

According to Tennis.com, Sharapova has been experiencing shoulder pain since June, with a possible injury time out of 2-3 months. Sharapova’s summer draws eerie comparisons to her ill-fated 2008 season. After a stellar start to 2008, Sharapova then exited Wimbledon in R2, dismally played one USO Series tournament, and then withdrew from the US Open. Let’s hope the comparisons end there, as fans know the end result was a Sharapova outage until May 2009.

Sharapova for her part expressed her disappointment at the decision stating, “It’s certainly not an easy decision to make ahead of one of my favorite tournaments, but I know it’s the right one that will get me back on the courts soon. I plan on taking the next few weeks off, receiving proper treatment and rehabilitation.”

Here’s to hoping with proper care the bursitis does not result in a more serious injury. And if you were wondering what bursitis even is, here’s WebMD for you. Just don’t go thinking you have this ailment now.
